Rhine

Drive from Switzerland via Germany to Holland.

The Rhine: inspiration for poets, fascinating destination for travelers. Once it separated nations, today it unites cultures. Cruises on the most important waterway in Western Europe start from Basel. From the historic Swiss city at the border triangle, the journey continues via the Rhine side canal (“Grand Canal d’Alsace”) to Strasbourg, the capital of Alsace.

From there we cross the border to Germany. Behind the cathedral cities of Speyer and Mainz lie the famous wine-growing regions and finally the romantic Middle Rhine with its castles and of course the Loreley.

After Königswinter, the Rhine leaves the Schiefergebirge behind and becomes the Lower Rhine. It flows past Cologne, Düsseldorf and Duisburg into the Netherlands.

Shortly after the border, the river divides and flows in several arms into the North Sea.

Numerous interesting cities lie on this stretch, for example Dordrecht or Rotterdam with its huge port. The Amsterdam-Rhine Canal is the link to the Dutch capital – usually the crowning highlight of any Rhine cruise.

Highlights: Basel, Strasbourg, Speyer, Mainz, Loreley, Königswinter, Cologne, Düsseldorf, Duisburg, Dordrecht, Rotterdam, Amsterdam.
